Regarding prevention of colds, I have found that Throat Coat tea by Traditional Medicinals works well if taken immediately upon detection of minor perturbations in the upper respiratory epithelium. I carry a bag or two at all times. Thanks for the excellent information on OTC remedies.

Throat Coat is what I recommend. I haven't had a cold in 30 years, but I give that info to anyone who asks. So far, everyone has reported good results.

The Covid IFRs in the paper by Ioannidis et al are an order of magnitude lower than this article's interpretation. This article says, "...0.03 percent, which means three hundredths of one percent. Which calculates to 30 people out of 10,000." The 0.03 percent is what the paper says, but that works out to 3 people out of 10,000, not 30.

You're correct. Thanks. I fixed it.

Just FYI phenylpropanolamine was taken off the market in the US about 10 years ago

I didn't know that. It was over ten years ago when I treated the two women for congestive failure. I guess I wasn't the only one.

The Trusted News Iniative, spearheaded by the BBC perhaps played a very large part in aligning media voices. I don't trust this news.

"The Trusted News Initiative (TNI) was set up last year (2019) to protect audiences and users from disinformation, particularly around moments of jeopardy, such as elections. The TNI complements existing programmes partners have in place.

The partners currently within the TNI are: AP, AFP; BBC, CBC/Radio-Canada, European Broadcasting Union (EBU),Facebook, Financial Times, First Draft, Google/YouTube, The Hindu, Microsoft , Reuters, Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, Twitter, The Washington Post."

I don't trust it either. I have a high level of suspicion for any "initiative" set up to purge misinformation or disinformation, especially one that many of the legacy media sign on to.

The crowding around of the bagge carousel is endemic in most airports in Europe and Australia, most (all?) airports have a coloured line and signs telling people to stay back but everyone ignores this and even push their trolleys up to the carousel to block off even more access. My tactic is to spot where the bags come out and then position myself so I can track my bag when it pops out, then push my way in to get it. In places where the bags enter via a wall opening I’ll postion myself right there, it’s funny how most of the herd congregates around the centre of the carousel so being at the far end avoids the madness of crowds.

We use a similar technique. It's just amazing how herd-like people are in those situations.

Dr. Eades, can pregnant women safely consume Umcka? Thanks!

The label says it should not be used during pregnancy or by nursing mothers. Probably because it is a natural substance and the manufacturers did not want to go to the expense of testing in pregnant or nursing women. Just to play it safe, I wouldn't recommend it during pregnancy.

Thank you, Doctor. I should have just read the package on Amazon! My daughter-in-law is 24 weeks pregnant. She's had Covid for the first time in October, then recently the flu, and now an apparent ear infection. None of her physicians are willing to recommend any supplements or natural remedies, but maybe that's because, as you say, they weren't tested in pregnant or nursing women. I feel bad for her being so sick this winter.

I feel your pain. My DIL who is breastfeeding has been sick. Not much I can do for her.

Thank you for your input. I hope your DIL feels better soon. Happy new year and thank you for the newsletter. I always look forward to it!

Good to hear. I cannot remember the last time I had a cold, however, there have been half a dozen or so instances of discernible upper resp epithelial perturbations this fall that vanished after drinking the tea and/or gargling with salt water. One day I did both several times every couple of hours and wondered if ithe throat problems would persist but they did not luckily. Have not yet had covid, knock on wood. Just a matter of time.

I'm very prone to respiratory illnesses. The best things I've found are Mucinex and fermented Yakult and fermented Ideal Immunity (a probiotic). I tried ivermectin for what turned out to be a cold, and it seemed to work well, too. Umcka doesn't do anything for me.

What brand of Umcka do you take? Which form? What's the dosage? I'm looking forward to trying this, as well as getting my hands on some Ivermectin. Thursday is my favorite day of the week!

But if “content warning” takes the place of “trigger warning,” why wouldn’t “content warning” ultimately “cause [just as much] stress about what is to follow” as trigger warning now does?

That's called the "euphemism treadmill" my friend and I love when silly people start jogging on it.

I never heard of Umcka. So thanks for that. All the links you provided lead to products containing sugar. For alternatives, search on Amazon for 'Pelargonium sidoides'.

I can't wait to give it a try, but it might be a long wait, because I haven't had a URI since starting low-carb in 2010 ;)

Knock on wood!

'Don’t think it was just Twitter and other Big Tech companies. My bet is that it was all legacy media. The government just didn’t have to work all that hard to get CNN, NBC, ABC, MSNBC to come along for the ride.'

Surely you've heard of TNI, the Trusted News Initiative, which coordinated mainstream media coverage.

Check justwatch.com. That's my first go-to when I wanna watch something on streaming. It will tell you if and where movies or TV shows are available, price, etc.

Ah! I didn’t think about subtitles…I buy British DVDs there all the time (and still use the subtitles!, lol!) you might also need a “all region” player….
